Mental Health (Care and Treatment) (Scotland) Act 2003

The Act sets out the main rules for how people with mental disorders in Scotland should be cared for and treated.

It's the key piece of mental health law, later updated by the Mental Health (Scotland) Act 2015. It aims to protect people’s rights and independence, and it places duties on local authorities to provide proper care and support.
