Part of GA in Social Work pilot

Scottish Funding Council (SFC) evaluation

The SFC chaired an evaluation meeting on 26 June 2026 to review the first year (pilot) of the GA in SW, identify learning from the pilot, consider whether any issues had arisen with the framework or delivery model, and determine whether partners were content to support wider rollout. Representatives from the National Social Work Agency (NSWA), Skills Development Scotland (SDS), the University of the West of Scotland (UWS) and the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC) also presented on the development phase and pilot programme journey, contributing their views to the overall evaluation.

The SFC concluded that the pilot represents a strong example of partners working through a challenging development process involving multiple agencies, regulatory requirements, and new delivery arrangements.

In their subsequent communication to universities across Scotland, the SFC said they are pleased to advise that the Graduate Apprenticeship in Social Work β€œis now available to be taken forward by university providers, following the successful pilot delivery of the programme by the University of the West of Scotland (UWS) and the subsequent positive evaluation of the pilot by SSSC, SDS, SG and SFC.

Providers wishing to deliver the GA in Social Work should note that, as with all new GA programmes, delivery remains subject to a successful validation event in line with SFC's Graduate Apprenticeship Guidance. This includes ensuring that the proposed programme aligns with the published GA Framework requirements and undertaking a formal validation process with appropriate external representation.

Providers will also be responsible for securing any necessary approval and engagement with the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC) and ensuring that delivery arrangements meet all relevant professional and regulatory requirements.

We recognise the significant interest across the sector in the Social Work GA and look forward to supporting providers who wish to develop delivery plans for future intakes, while thanking UWS , other university colleagues and partner stakeholders, for their work in the development of the Framework.” (SFC August 2026)
