Measurement, performance and reporting

Measuring progress and impact

To ensure the NSWA’s work delivers real and lasting benefits for the social work profession and the people of Scotland, the NSWA will implement a robust framework for measurement and performance.

Each of NSWA’s six strategic objectives is linked to outcomes and indicative key performance indicators (KPIs) to track progress, guide decision-making and provide assurance that the NSWA is delivering on its commitments. Measurement and reporting will align with the SSWP for transparency and shared accountability. Findings will drive continuous improvement activities and strategic planning.

Reporting on plans

Progress against the NSWA Corporate Plan and NSWA Annual Delivery Plan will be monitored and reported through a range of mechanisms:

  • regular progress reports for the NSWA Senior Leadership Team and the NSWA Management Advisory Board, and for Scottish Ministers
  • annual reviews will assess delivery against targets and milestones, identifying areas of success and opportunities for improvement
  • public reporting will ensure transparency, with publication of documents and performance data

Progress will be reported jointly, where appropriate, reflecting the NSWA and the SSWP priorities and achievements. Key reports and performance data will be published in accessible formats to ensure transparency and accountability.

National Chief Social Work Adviser Annual Report

The NCSWA’s statutory annual report is a cornerstone of NSWA accountability, providing an independent assessment of social work services and the workforce, highlighting achievements and challenges, and recommending future actions. It will be laid before Scottish Ministers and will be published to ensure the profession and the public is informed of progress and priorities.

Continuous improvement and learning

Continuous improvement and learning underpin NSWA’s approach. The NSWA will actively seek feedback from the workforce, partners, students, people with lived experience and the public to refine its work. This ongoing commitment ensures adaptability and responsiveness.

Lessons learned and insights from reviews, research and lived experience will shape strategies and priorities, and support the NSWA to lead excellence and drive positive change. By embedding a culture of reflection, evidence-based learning and openness to feedback, NSWA will ensure its work remains relevant and effective, sharing best practice to drive sector-wide improvement and innovation.
