Professional learning
Professional learning is the learning you will undertake throughout your career as a qualified social worker. The Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC) is the regulatory body that sets the rules and requirements for social work continuous professional learning and social work awards.
Continuous professional learning
As a social worker you must:
- register with the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC)
- follow the Code of Practice for Social Service Workers
The Code of Practice states you must undertake continuous professional learning each year. This helps keep your knowledge, skills and practice up to date.
You’re responsible for undertaking relevant continuous professional learning. This is whether employed on a permanent, temporary or casual basis.
To comply with the Code of Practice, employers must provide suitable learning and development opportunities for their employees.

Specialist pathways
We’re committed to supporting opportunities for professional development. This includes specialist awards linked to specific functions and duties.
We’ll work with social workers and partners to review their experience and consider any new specialist awards that may be needed. This is part of a national training plan.
